Palm Springs Stammtisch is a German cultural exchange and community hub in Southern California.
We connect Germans, German-Americans, and friends of Europe through language, tradition, and community events. Our mission is to preserve heritage, support citizenship and cultural resources, and build bridges between Germany and the U.S.
🌿 Our Founding Story
Palm Springs Stammtisch was founded in honor of Elisabeth Haertel together with Marius Olbrych, both immigrants who built a life in the United States.
Their story began by chance, when Marius—while holding an open house in Rancho Mirage—knocked on Elisabeth’s door. That unexpected meeting blossomed into a friendship across generations. Elisabeth, who had lived in the U.S. for many decades, became the grandmother Marius never had: a mentor, a friend, and a source of wisdom in the post-pandemic world.
At 91, Elisabeth’s resilience and spirit inspired Marius, a single father devoted to his son Jasper and his career. Sunday lunches with Elisabeth soon became a tradition for Marius and Jasper—meals filled with conversation, laughter, and stories of the old Heimat.
Out of those gatherings grew Palm Springs Stammtisch: a community dedicated to bringing together like-minded people of German heritage and friends of European culture. What began as a simple lunch became a living tradition—a place where heritage is honored, friendships are built, and culture thrives.
